August 20, 2013 Terao @ Order is now a database administrator. His expertise on map pack is invaluable.
Future updates will now be a collaboration, so expect some new exciting updates.
There has been many revamps to the backend scripts to allow maintaining the database by multiple individuals, with flexible searching/editing methods.
This will also contribute to redundancy for future updates as well a broader array of input. Stay tuned for more...
September 5, 2013 MAP PACK 3.7 IS RELEASED! Since Terao and I have overhauled 3.6 entirely, we decided to push the version up to 3.7.
But don't worry, we made sure it will integrate seamlessly with 3.6. So if you are already using 3.6, you do NOT have to uninstall 3.6.
Updating will still be the same procedures as 3.6. That aspect has not changed. So think of 3.7 as 3.6, but improved!
If you are currently a 3.6 user, simply download 3.7 and unzip/overwrite to your Istaria folder, to upgrade.
May 7, 2014 MAP PACK 3.7 is now available in an EXE/MSI installer program! Foolproof installation and uninstallation (uninstall from Control Panel).

Tip - Did you know? You can use mouse wheel to zoom in and out of the game map.
But if you point somewhere on the map (while using mouse wheel) it will keep the area around mouse cursor in focus!

Note: Beginning with Dec 21, 2012 patch, you can now search/verify what version you currently have installed, in game map.

Steps to Verify Version you have Installed:

  • Dec 21, 2012 - Aug 9, 2013 - Enable/tick "Landmarks/Interests" button. Be sure to be in the Istaria map (pulldown menu).
  • Sep 5, 2013 - Dec 7, 2013 - Enable/tick "City Names" button. Be sure to be in the Istaria map (pulldown menu).
  • Feb 8 - Present - Enable/tick "Geography" button. Be sure to be in the Istaria map (pulldown menu).

Next, search for the word "Version" (Magnifying glass icon on map).
Hover the only marker/label found to see the current version you have installed.

If your search for "Version" failed, then you currently have an old version (before Dec 21, 2012) or a version not downloaded from this site.

  • If you are installing map pack for the very first time, then please download Map Pack 3.7, not 3.5 or 3.6!

If you are currently a Map Pack 3.5 or 3.6 user, then I strongly encourage you to upgrade to 3.7!

    MAP PACK OVERVIEW:

Map pack behaves exactly like the normal game map. The only thing map pack does is add extra buttons (filters) and adds predefined markers/locations on your map. These 'predefined' locations are simply a compilation gathered by players. The different buttons allows you to hide/show certain categories (resources, monsters, etc) of these predefined markers.

Map pack does NOT intefere with your ability to manually add and maintain your own markers/locations. When you add markers they are saved the same way, it normally does, as if you didn't have map pack installed. New markers do NOT get saved to the map pack folder (resources_override) or add marker/locations to the predefined locations. Instead your markers are saved the same way as if you did not have map pack installed. Map pack markers and your own markers will always be saved in different files. In other words, all of your previously saved markers, will coexist with map pack perfectly. You can show/hide those markers seperately, with push of a button

Whenever you save a location/marker on the map, it saves it to \Prefs\<CHARACTER_NAME>\Uimapmarkers.def file. All map pack markers/locations are stored in the \Resources_Override folder, which is created when you install map pack. So any markers you manually add does not conflict with map pack, and map pack does not conflict with any markers you manually add.

Tip: If you are adding alot of your own markers/locations, keep this file archived (uimapmarkers.def), in case you ever need to reinstall the game. By putting this file back, all of your locations you added, will return. Actually a better suggestion would be just to archive the entire C:\<Your Game Folder>\Prefs folder. This includes the map markers you added, and all of the hotkeys, key bindings, chat settings, that you have updated previously. If you ever need to reinstall the game, then just unzip the contents of the \Prefs folder back into a new install of the game, and everything should be just the way you left it :)

Ok, now that we've covered the fact that map pack doesn't overwrite/modify/remove, nor interfere in any way with markers you manually add and already have on your list. Let's move on...

    • What exactly is Map Pack?

Take a look at below screenshot of Map Pack. Notice how there are many markers below? Locations to almost every NPC, Monster, Resource, Travel Locations (Pad/Portals), etc are included. So the work of adding many markers has already been compiled by players over time. You will have a great advantage and be able to search and find many things easily, in Istaria.

Also notice the extra buttons on the left side? These extra buttons (filters) show/hide various markers. They fall into multiple categories, including:

      • Monsters
      • NPC's
      • Resources
      • Travel Spots (Teleporters, Arrival Pads)
      • Interests (Landmarks/Walls/Temples)
      • Plots/Lairs (Map Pack 3.6 + 3.7 only - Credits to Terao)

    • Additional features:

      • Updated Terrain (Istaria Map) images - Some of the images in the original game install isn't quite up to par. For instance, there are many lakes/ponds/rivers missing. Or some just aren't colored in blue and look like normal terrain (dirt).
      • Additional Maps not included in game: Dralnok's Doom, Rift, and Isle of Battle, New Rachival, Tomb of Ashlander, Helian's Tomb.
      • More 'Points of Interests' labels on map! ie Central Marsh and Izzon's Peak (screenshot below) are examples of POI labels.
There are much more POI labels in map pack. The benefit is these labels are also searchable in the game map.
      • New map indicators (Map Pack 3.6 only - Credits to Terao). Screenshots and more info below, here.

DOWNLOAD MAP PACK + COMMUNITY UPDATES:

    • If you want to install Map Pack for the very first time, then download 3.7 and not 3.5! The below downloads are for both new installations and updating previous installations.

    • If you currently have 3.5/3.6 installed and do not wish to upgrade to 3.7, then you may choose the 3.5/3.6 download to update to the last available version of 3.5/3.6.

    • Regardless, downloading updates will integrate seamlessly with your current map pack install. When updating, no extra steps required (ie editing files with notepad - only required for first time installation). All you need to do is simply unzip/overwrite the .zip file to your 'Istaria' folder!

    • Important: You must unzip the downloaded file to your 'Istaria' base game folder (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria).
Make sure you select (highlight) the 'Istaria' folder when you click the "Extract All Files" button (in Windows Explorer).

HOW TO UPGRADE FROM MAP PACK 3.5 to 3.7

    1. Delete the 'Interface' folder, from your the 'Resource_Override' folder, inside your game folder
      (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Resources_Override\Interface).

In other words, navigate to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Resource_Override' folder. Inside that folder will be a folder named 'Interface'. Right click the folder and choose Delete.

    2. Remove Read-only permission (set previously by Map Pack 3.5 install) to the 'UIMapWindow.def' file in your 'Resources' folder
      (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Resources\Interface\Themes\Default\Defs\UIMapWindow.def file).

In other words, navigate to 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Resources\Interface\Themes\Default\Defs' folder. Right click the file called UIMapWindow.def, choose Properties and Uncheck the Read-only box (Attributes).

    3. Open Notepad:
Win Vista/Win7: Run as Admin: Click Start, type Notepad in Search bar, Right click Notepad, choose Run as Administrator option.
Windows XP: Click Start, click Run... , type Notepad in the box, click OK. It will bring up Notepad.

Now click File (on menu bar at top), then Open. Bottom right corner, click the arrow and change Text Documents (*.txt) option to All Files (*.*). Now navigate to and Open the 'Clientprefs_Common.def' file, inside your 'Prefs' folder.
      (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Prefs).

Near the bottom, look for and change this line:
      string mapPath = "resources_override/interface/maps"

      Change to this:
      string mapPath = "resources_override/resources/interface/maps"

Now save the file by clicking File again and choose Save.

Make sure you edit/save this file while OFFLINE (not playing the game). When you exit the game, it writes to this file and would undo your changes. The game doesn't recognize your changes until you start the game with the new changes. If you accidentally edited this file while online, just exit the game FIRST, THEN save the file AGAIN (after game completely shuts down).

    4. Download Map Pack 3.7. I recommend you Save the file first. Now Open the zip file (Open With... Windows Explorer).
Click the Extract all files button at top. Now, click "Browse..." button, navigate and select your game folder (likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria).
Make sure you Browse to and Select your 'Istaria' folder as the destination (not the 'resources' or 'resources_override' folder)!
Now click Extract button. Make sure you always choose to Overwrite (Replace) existing files!

      Windows Vista/Win 7 Prompts:

    5. Now start the game, you should now see the new additions when you open the Map!

Changes you will see and should note; when upgrading from 3.5:

      • The Guild/Settlements button is no longer there. The Guild and Settlements data is merged with the Player Cities button.
      • There is now a Plot/Lairs button now. It displays markers to all plots and lair locations.
Credits to Terao for this feature and the painful work I'm sure it was to gather the data... You da' man!
      • Named Mobs are now included in the Monster button. Note as of May 11, 2013, Map Pack 3.5 also adopted this change as well (easier to export data for both versions). Previously 3.5 had named mobs in the NPC's category/button.
      • New map indicator: Your location on the map will no longer be a white dot. Instead it will be a white dot, within a circle and arrow pointer surrounding it. The pointer will also rotate/point (in real time) in the direction you are currently facing.
Credits to Terao for this feature.

        Map_indicator_direction.png Map_indicator_direction1.png Map_indicator_direction2.png Map_indicator_direction3.png

The first image above is the default indicator in 3.6. But you can change it to one of the other images, above.

Here are instructions for changing the indicator to another image:

Look inside the C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\resources_override\resources\inteface\themes\default\textures folder.

'Map_indicator_direction.png' is the indicator that displays in map. Simply rename 'Map_indicator_direction1.png' (Green Dragon), 'Map_indicator_direction2.png' (Purple Dragon) or 'Map_indicator_direction3.png' (Small dot with arrow) to Map_indicator_direction.png. Hover above images to see what the filename is.

If you are "set in your ways" and just prefer the old white dot instead of the new moving indicator, then no problem.
Heres how to bring that 3.5 feature back to your 3.7 install:

Look inside the C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\resources_override\resources\inteface\themes\default\textures folder.

Rename 'Map_indicator_direction.png' to something else (ie 'Map_indicator_direction.png.bak' or whatever)
        Copy/Paste/+Rename 'Map_marker_white.png' to 'Map_indicator_direction.png'

NEW INSTALL / UPDATING EXISTING MAP PACK INSTRUCTIONS:

As of May 7, 2013, you can now install map pack with an .exe installer program. If you use this, then you can ignore all instructions below. The installer will take care of everything!

    1. Download and Unzip the file (double click the file, then click 'Extract All Files' button at top left). Extract to your 'Istaria' game folder (most likely this would be C:\Program Files\Istaria on 32 bit Windows versions OR C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria on 64 bit Windows versions). If you're not sure, RIGHT click the Istaria game icon (that you click to launch the game), choose Properties, to see what folder it is installed in.

      Windows Vista/Win 7 Prompts:

NOTE: If you already have a previous version of 3.6 or 3.7 of Map Pack installed and are updating, STOP, YOU ARE DONE AT STEP 1.

Unzipping the file is the only required step for an update. You do NOT need to do steps 2 and 3 again. In fact, if you already have a previous version of map pack installed, you can unzip the new update, even while online! As soon as you reopen your map, the updates will be shown. You do not need to go offline to do an update (only first time installation requires going offline).

However, if this is your first time installing map pack, then proceed with Steps 2 and 3!

    2. With Notepad, edit the ClientPrefs_Common.def file in your Prefs folder.
      (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Prefs\Clientprefs_common.def file).

Windows XP: Right click this file, choose "Open with.." and choose Notepad).
Windows Vista and Win7: you may need to open Notepad as Administrator to be able to save the file (access denied error when trying to save file). But try the method above first, the "Windows XP" instructions. If that fails and you get an access denied error, then you will need to do the following steps, instead:

Note below are Window Vista/Win 7 instructions but will also work for Windows XP (except there is no run as administrator option, so disregard that step. Just left click the Notepad icon instead and open normally.

      • Click Start, All Programs, Accessories.
      • RIGHT click Notepad, Choose "Run as Administrator". You will likely see a prompt "Do you want to allow this program to make changes?". Choose YES!
      • Click File on top menu bar, then choose Open. On bottom right corner is a pulldown menu.
It should already show "Text Documents (*.txt)". Click and change it to show "All files (*.*)".
      • Click Local Disk (C:) on left, then navigate to your game folder (likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria), then navigate to the Prefs folder.
      • Now select the Clientprefs_common.def and click Open. Edit this file as described below:

      Map Pack 3.6 + 3.7:
Near the bottom, look for and change this line:
      string mapPath = "resources/interface/maps"

      Change to this:
      string mapPath = "resources_override/resources/interface/maps"

Special Note: Original Map Pack 3.6 + 3.7 also requires you to edit the ResourceMeta.def file, located in your Resources folder and requires you to set the Read-Only permission to that file. You do not need to worry about that with this modified version. Included in the zip file is the already edited ResoureMeta.def file you need. It also has the Read-Only permission set. It will also unzip with this file, with Read-Only permission already set in your game folder!

      Map Pack 3.5:
Near the bottom, look for and change this line:
      string mapPath = "resources/interface/maps"

      Change to this:
      string mapPath = "resources_override/interface/maps"

Now save the file by clicking "File" (on top menu bar in Notepad) and choose "Save".

    3. Now start the game, you should now see the new buttons, tons of markers displaying, when you open the Map!

    HOW TO UNINSTALL MAP PACK:

If you used the .exe installer program, then go to Control Panel, Programs and Uninstall Programs option. You can uninstall map pack here (if you installed using the .exe installer program). Otherwise, follow these instructions:
    1. Exit Game (if you are playing now).

    2. Now edit the 'ClientPrefs.def' file in your 'Prefs' folder.
      (Likely C:\Program files (x86)\Istaria\Prefs).

Win Vista/Win 7 - Note if you get an access denied error when saving the file, then you will need to open notepad manually and run as Admin. Click Start button, type Notepad in the search bar. Right click Notepad, choose Run as Administrator. Now navigate to the ClientPrefs.def file, in your game's Prefs folder.

Edit the ClientPrefs.def file with notepad (Right click this file in Windows Explorer, choose Open with Notepad).

      Map Pack 3.5:
Near the bottom, change this line:
      string mapPath = "resources_override/interface/maps"

      Change to this:
      string mapPath = "resources/interface/maps"

      Map Pack 3.6 + 3.7:
Near the bottom, change this line:
      string mapPath = "resources_override/resources/interface/maps"

      Change to this:
      string mapPath = "resources/interface/maps"

Now Save the File! (Click File, then Save or Ctrl + S) - If it fails to save, then look above at the Win Vista/Win 7 notes!

    3. Remove Read-Only permissions to the appropriate file (see below).
This is done by Right clicking the file (in Windows Explorer), choose Properties, Uncheck the box "Read-Only" (Attributes).

      Map Pack 3.5:
Remove Read-only permission to 'UIMapWindow.def' file from your 'Resources\Interface\Themes\Default\Defs' folder
      (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Resources\Interface\Themes\Default\Defs\UIMapWindow.def file).

      Map Pack 3.6 + 3.7:
Remove Read-only permission of the 'ResourceMeta.def' file from your 'Resources' folder
      (Likely C:\Program Files (x86)\Istaria\Resources\ResourceMeta.def file).

    4. Save File and Start the Game launcher/patcher now and initiate a Full Scan:

Choose to do a Full Scan from the Game Launcher/Patcher:
Click the 'Troubleshoot' button and check the first box "Full Scan - Fully Scan and patch all game files".
Click Back button then start the game (Play button).
